Grid System: A Love Letter to 90s Design

The project vision

As a creative developer, I've alway been fascinated by the geometric aesthetics of the 90s - an era where design was bold, grid-based, and unapologetically geometric. Grid System is my attempt to capture the essence through generative art.

Technical Implementation

The project uses Javascript and HTML5 Canvas to create a dynamic grid-based system that generates unique compositions, Here's what makes it special.

Core features:

  • Dynamic grid structure: Uses an algorithm to create grids ranging from 4x4 to 10x10
  • Cell hierarchy: Implements both macro cells (40-90% of space) and micro cells (1-3%)
  • Color theory: Three casually curated palettes inspired by 90s design
palette1: ["#3dd5cd", "#ff00ae", "#ff9100", "#a79fff"]
palette2: ["#97d63e", "#aa00ff", "#ff5900", "#f7c7bc"]
palette3: ["#c1a782", "#9debdf", "#dde631", "#b663ff"]

Why I created Grid System:

  • Nostalgia: Growing up in the 90s, I was influenced by the era's distinctive design language
  • Exploration: Wanted to explore how randomness could create balanced compositions
  • Preservation: Aim to capture and reinterpret the aesthetic principles of early digital design
  • Innovation: Combining historical design principles with modern generative art techniques

Interactive elements

The project encourages exploration:

  • Click: Generate new compositions with different patterns and color distributions
  • Press "S": Export your favorite compositions as SVG file
