ArtUP - Vol. 2
#1faaf1 is a lovely color - the color of skies and robin's eggs, but what drew me into Elout de Kok's project was the stark black and white preview; the sense of trees in snow in some untrammeled place. My eye was pulled into the space, delighted by the simple graphic detail in the trees and the way they marched out of the frame. The true magic of the work took me by surprise when it began to slowly evolve. The work is a living thing, but without any of the urgency of the typical animation. There is no frenetic movement - only a gentle evolution that reminds me to slow down, to breathe, to observe, to savor this moment and this beautiful work.

Lammetje's project, Maru, is another meditative piece. The restful palette, the detail, and the symbolism of the repeated circles invite contemplation. Examining it leaves me with the feeling of mentally walking a labyrinth in quiet solitude. The power to be found in the repetition of a simple motif skillfully executed also serves as a metaphor for living in wisdom in the midst of the chaos and pressures of a modern life rife with anxieties.

GM.GEN.MATH, Aleksandra's tribute to Herbert W. Franke, is math given life. It offers a map to new ideas and new worlds. It shows us something ephemeral caught in a particle ray and exposed for a moment in time. It invites us to seek wonders as yet unknown. Is it a research paper or a work of art? I immediately respond to it as both, and yet more than either. It is a portal and I want to step through.
