PAPER CUT
By Kusamehewa
To begin at the end. The paper like texture which is the final layer in this artwork is created by a simple repeating pattern of small ellipses and rectangles. These have randomised dimensions and transparency. The process of deciding exactly how to define and create these shapes is the same as for all of my fabric textures. I begin by taking high resolution photographs of the texture I wish to emulate then analyse the light and shadow patterns to create a repeating pattern. The texture layer created contains only black and white colours with different transparency settings. This particular texture was created from photographs of canvas. It can be placed over any colour or design to make the surface appear tactile, interesting and realistic.
For this work I wanted to use a more complex tessellation pattern than for previous works. I hoped this would generate interesting designs and an underlying tessellation that would be more difficult to identify.
After some experimentation I decided on a tessellation of regular hexagons, squares and equilateral triangles. I decided to use two colours and that each side should be divided into seven so where each side meets the side of another shape there are three widths of one colour and four of another.
Here are some examples of each of the shapes - they are not complete as they are missing the edge ellipses that are added after drawing the main shapes....
Ellipses of the appropriate colours are necessary along the edges of the shapes to cover any thin lines that otherwise appear. Looking at these ellipses on their own also shows the underlying tessellation pattern very clearly.
Then all we need is a bit of maths to place the shapes in the right places and randomly rotate them.
When the grid is removed it is very difficult to see how the pattern is constructed.
To create the layered effect I made four separate graphics layers with the same design but different colour arrangements. I drew shadows around the edges of shapes on each of the graphics or on the layer underneath depending on which way the shadow should fall. I then erased the shapes drawn so the underlying layer would be revealed.
Finally, I like to add some interaction to my pieces where appropriate. This gives the collector the option of modifying the final piece to their liking - within constraints. In this work the interaction is limited to changing the order of the colours and the randomised elements of the layout without changing the palette or the main layout choice.
