Everybody hates wasps
By David_Straff
Ever since human kind is a thing as a species on the planet Earth, there is one major enemy which seemingly is making the life of mankind harder and pretty much inconvenient. I’m talking about the black and yellow striped little fancy looking monsters, who are lurking on every balcony, park or terrace of a coffee shop. The creatures that make at least one person in a three-person group scream in panic, which can be annoying if the screaming one is not allergic to their bites. But even if that loud friend is not allergic, these tiny beasts can give you several bites without any consequences, almost like a natural machine gun. To put it plainly, the majority of the world's population doesn’t really fancy these animals, and they wish them dead every time they have an encounter with a wasp. But are they really that unnecessary?
According to scientists, wasps are actually quite beneficial in the environment. They might not be as efficient pollinators as bees are since they don’t have designated pollen sacks. But they are carrying small amounts of pollen on their bodies, so when they are looking for nectar to eat, they accidentally drop some pollen on the flowers. This is more like a fun fact, but here comes the most interesting thing that these animals are doing every day, making our lives less unbearable, but still they only get hate and bullying from the humans...
Wasps are natural pest control. They are skilled hunters and eat various pests, from bugs to larvae, from cockroaches to cicadas or any disgusting flying, dirty beings that can harm agriculture or your peace in your cozy room. If all wasps in the world were to go extinct, the pest insects population would rise, affecting crops, diminishing food sources for larger animals, in turn, humans.
So are they really that bad? Not for me, but maybe I didn’t convince you with the facts I just wrote down. Put it this way: everyone hates wasps, but without wasps everyone would suffer. You can use wasps, but you can’t use them if you kill them. You can embrace them, but not if you kill them. The only logical choice is that you use them and embrace them. So killing the wasps can’t be an option. You can always think about which one do you hate more: Wasps or spiders and cockroaches? Without our black and yellow striped little bullies those two would just overpopulate and move to your bathroom, giving you company while having a number one or two.
If you still think that wasps are scary and you don’t like them, that’s completely fine, you don’t have to like them, but at least now you know what would happen if they went extinct and after all, they are useful little animals.
