A New Dawn

The fires burn; the land is swept clean by swathes of smoke.
Black pyres, their greedy fingers cracked and blistered.
The light of twin suns, pouring blindly into space.
A memory of grass, of days of sun—
—a blue hose held askance—
the flare of new light dawning over cracked and unsmoothed hands.
