This work is a reinterpretation of 16th and 17th century Japanese barrier paintings as generative art inspired by them.
Barrier paintings are decorative paintings on the walls, sliding doors and screens of temples and private residences, and played a role in the decoration of traditional Japanese interiors.
Incorporating themes of seasonality, sacredness and longevity, they were used to entertain guests, demonstrate the owner's taste and cultural sophistication, and serve as a catalyst for dialogue.
In this work, the characteristic 'scatter composition' of barrier paintings is expressed through an algorithm. The background is an abstract space created by two different types of blurring, and the flowers, rain and water patterns are randomly placed. Each motif is rendered with noise, creating a dynamic and lively impression.
The layers, filters and masks are rendered using a combination of p5.js and SVG filters. This is an attempt to reinterpret and apply graphic design techniques to generative art.
The work is presented as four canvases in layers with individual SVG filters applied. They are used as colour mixing, blurring and masking to create visual depth. The top layer contains three types of flowers and grasses drawn using the noise() function, with the number of individuals and their locations determined by the random() function. This dynamic arrangement brings the bold composition and beauty of margins to the screen.
Canvas has a ratio of 1:1.236.
Each layer generates an 989 x 800 pixel graphic that is resized to fit the window and drawn on the canvas.
I hope you enjoy the rhythmic and decorative qualities of this work and that the visual experience resonates with you. Please take a moment to feel how the barrier painting relates to contemporary NFT art.
