Early humans survived in tightly knit tribes where recognizing and remembering individuals (even from stories) had value. This instinct to form attachments, even to those we don’t interact with directly, persists today. From mythological heroes to religious figures, humans have long admired and emotionally invested in distant, often idealized personalities.

Parasocial relationships are neither inherently good nor bad. They provide comfort, motivation, and even emotional stability for some. They can inspire creativity, self-improvement, or community formation. However, they can also distort perceptions of reality, encourage consumerist manipulation, and lead to emotional dependency.

The key question is balance. As Plato warned about being ruled by illusions, one must distinguish between meaningful social bonds and fabricated intimacy. If parasocial relationships supplement real human connections rather than replace them, they serve a benign, even beneficial role. If they become a primary substitute for real relationships, they risk deepening delusions, loneliness and disconnection.
