A dichotomy is a division or contrast between two things that are presented as being entirely different or opposite. It comes from the Greek words dikho (meaning "in two") and tomia (meaning "cutting"). Essentially, a dichotomy splits a concept, system, or argument into two distinct and mutually exclusive parts.

The biggest philosophical question is whether humans are just complex arrangements of cells or if there’s something more—like consciousness, soul, or a unique self beyond biology.
