Project

  • the animation takes time to trigger so you can read the generative prose *

ram•ble - talk or write at length in a confused or inconsequential way / a walk taken for pleasure in the countryside

Ramble is narrative artwork about a life (or lives). From a single observation to a long history. Part prose part painting. After a time the letters of the narrative slowly cover with tiny abstract landscapes. They are the type of landscape painting you would paint on a postage stamp. As the size of the narrative grows it becomes harder and harder to read all the letters before they are covered. Eventually when all the letters are covered the landscapes are walked over and scratched. There is no trace of what was there to start.

Just code (Javascript, no frameworks or dependencies).

Technical / Artistic

The prose is built around a slotted algorithm that builds sentences always starting with a universal pronoun. It then splits and randomizes the lines and fills the allotted grid space it is given. The build up of sentences creates a sort of character study or life.

The landscapes are a set of very simple rolling shapes with texture applied, they stick to a predefined color scheme chosen by the hash. They remind me of tissue paper stained glass kids make in kindergarten.

The scratches are just that, scratches or shapes that bleed through to the background. They serve to flatten and wipe away, chair scratches on a ballroom floor or bird footprints in sand.

Scaling the image up or down will yield slightly different final outputs. I prefer the 10:9 view ratio. Right click to save image.

We knew all the right things to say, but forgot them when we needed them. We built tiny robots we drove about with remote controls. We became overcome with joy. We made morbid jokes. We kept pets and wondered how they were bred from wolves and jungle cats. We took time to find the moon when the sky was clear. We kept inner monologues, they said 'Keep the eye on the prize slugger'. We listened to Wu-Tang Clan. We started new lives. New jobs. We got weird with age. We collected baseball cards, and some of us got rich from it. We ate papaya because our mentor said it would bring us fertility. We mistook crap for genius. We wished on shooting stars. We constantly outdid ourselves, when it came to buying things that didn't make us happy. We believed that finding a penny was good luck. We tried to stay busy but cynicism got to us. We buried the past or painted over it. We grew houseplants by the dozen. We rode bikes, sometimes just to clear our heads.1 of 85 indexed NFTs · 1%
