  • the animation takes time to trigger so you can read the generative prose *

ram•ble - talk or write at length in a confused or inconsequential way / a walk taken for pleasure in the countryside

Ramble is narrative artwork about a life (or lives). From a single observation to a long history. Part prose part painting. After a time the letters of the narrative slowly cover with tiny abstract landscapes. They are the type of landscape painting you would paint on a postage stamp. As the size of the narrative grows it becomes harder and harder to read all the letters before they are covered. Eventually when all the letters are covered the landscapes are walked over and scratched. There is no trace of what was there to start.

Just code (Javascript, no frameworks or dependencies).

Technical / Artistic

The prose is built around a slotted algorithm that builds sentences always starting with a universal pronoun. It then splits and randomizes the lines and fills the allotted grid space it is given. The build up of sentences creates a sort of character study or life.

The landscapes are a set of very simple rolling shapes with texture applied, they stick to a predefined color scheme chosen by the hash. They remind me of tissue paper stained glass kids make in kindergarten.

The scratches are just that, scratches or shapes that bleed through to the background. They serve to flatten and wipe away, chair scratches on a ballroom floor or bird footprints in sand.

Scaling the image up or down will yield slightly different final outputs. I prefer the 10:9 view ratio. Right click to save image.

Prose
We built schools in foreign countries. We ate raw ginger because our preacher said it would bring us fertility. We feared the best was behind us. We made morbid jokes. We started new lives. New hobbies. We gave kids ribbons for showing animals for slaughter. We took advice from people we didn't respect. We knew the youth would feel the weight of sadness. We wished we had our childhoods back to waste again. We buried the past or painted over it. We remembered the lyrics to countless oldies. We collected basketball cards, and put our favorites in plastic cases. We wrote poems and smoked weed. We kept pets and wondered how they were bred from wolves and jungle cats. We constantly outdid our predecessors. We swam fast moving rapids. We became hopeful. We believed sunshine was the best medicine. We listened to Run DMC. We hoped someone would look after us if we got sick. We rode bikes, cross country and close by. We grew uncertain of our early life choices.1 of 85 indexed NFTs · 1%
