  • the animation takes time to trigger so you can read the generative prose *

ram•ble - talk or write at length in a confused or inconsequential way / a walk taken for pleasure in the countryside

Ramble is narrative artwork about a life (or lives). From a single observation to a long history. Part prose part painting. After a time the letters of the narrative slowly cover with tiny abstract landscapes. They are the type of landscape painting you would paint on a postage stamp. As the size of the narrative grows it becomes harder and harder to read all the letters before they are covered. Eventually when all the letters are covered the landscapes are walked over and scratched. There is no trace of what was there to start.

Just code (Javascript, no frameworks or dependencies).

Technical / Artistic

The prose is built around a slotted algorithm that builds sentences always starting with a universal pronoun. It then splits and randomizes the lines and fills the allotted grid space it is given. The build up of sentences creates a sort of character study or life.

The landscapes are a set of very simple rolling shapes with texture applied, they stick to a predefined color scheme chosen by the hash. They remind me of tissue paper stained glass kids make in kindergarten.

The scratches are just that, scratches or shapes that bleed through to the background. They serve to flatten and wipe away, chair scratches on a ballroom floor or bird footprints in sand.

Scaling the image up or down will yield slightly different final outputs. I prefer the 10:9 view ratio. Right click to save image.

Prose
You grew less and less certain of your purpose. You listened to Johnny Cash. You gave it all you had. You knew all the right things to say, but forgot them when you needed them. You became overcome with regret. You remembered the lyrics to countless oldies. You rode the railway, sometimes just to clear your head. You watched baseball. You mistook beer for water. You collected fantasy cards, and never opened the packages. You took photos of cherry blossoms. You hoped for grace. You built tiny boats you drove about with remote controls. You believed in the power of persuasion. You buried the past or painted over it. You tried to stay hopeful but sadness got to you. You kept inner monologues, they said 'It's ok to be sad', but you cried anyway. You started a new life. New lovers. You constantly outdid yourself, when it came to buying things that didn't make you happy. You kept pets and loved them like children. You made robots that chirped and cried like babies.1 of 85 indexed NFTs · 1%
