Color Fields 2022, Vol.1

A digital re-interpretation of 1960's color field paitings.

A mix of P5 noise, lerpColor and blendMode.
The minted token on fxhash contains a textual description of how the color fields are built.

Pressing 's' saves the image as a PNG file.

Instructions

Color Fields 2022, Vol.1

A digital re-interpretation of 1960's color field paitings.

A mix of P5 noise, lerpColor and blendMode.

Pressing 's' saves the image as a PNG file.

This Generative Token creates two color field bars in a vertical alignment and draws them beside each other. The difference in color, shades, tones is realized using noise fields, the lerpColor function to blend two colors into one another, and the canvas blendMode, which affects how pixel are finally blended on-screen.

At startup, the sketch randomly selects four colors from the hue color model. Hue, saturation and brightness are chosen so that each color is not "too close" to one another, depending on predefined bands.

Then it creates four noise fields from the size of one of the two bars.

A bar is produced via these steps:

  • Run the following for each pixel:
  • Take the first two colors from above and use lerpColor to blend between them.
  • The interpolation amount for lerpColor is taken from the 1st noise field.
  • Add brightness to the resulting color as value from the 2nd noise field.
  • Paint this pixel.
  • Paint the ragged border lines by subdividing a line into many small segments, adding coordinate jitter and paint over several times using white.
  • Iterate all these steps again but with the 3rd and 4th color, and the 3rd and 4th noise field respectively.
  • Do this second iteration with a HARD_LIGHT blend mode.

The left bar is produced this way. The right bar is produced the same way but

  • with the four colors swapped (1<->3, 2<->4)
  • colors slightly modulated in their hues.
  • with a blendMode of SOFT_LIGHT instead of HARD_LIGHT
